STEP 17: EXTERNAL LINKS (RECIPROCAL LINKS)

The only thing that will never change, despite search engine and search technology improvements, is that links will be the most important part of any website promotion campaign.

In fact, depending on your niche, up to 80% of your rank in Google may depend on your ability to effectively create reciprocal links with complimentary sites.

Focus your marketing efforts on your customers, and you will get a high “Organic Search Engine Ranking." Search Engines want the most relevant results therefore you need to focus your marketing campaign on what customers want so that you are the MOST relevant site in your market niche.

Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search.

Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query.

For more information on Google PageRank, go to Google’s Webmaster Site.

While the above example deals with Google, all search engines work basically the same. Well optimized pages and reciprocal link exchanges will help you gain qualified visitors and high search engine relevance for your site.

Be careful with your reciprocal link relationships to use a direct quote from Google

Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links. “

Section 4 of  Marvin's DotNetNuke SEO Marketing 101: Reciprocal Links will teach you how to implement your reciprocal link strategy and how to create natural reciprocal link exchanges that organically increase your web traffic, build your website SERP and add value to your web page PR.
